The term, “a shot at life” conjures up a second chance, another opportunity.  At 5:01 p.m. on a Friday afternoon, to Maria Elena Duron, a shot at life meant something else.   It was the call that changed her life forever…

Her oldest son accidentally shot her 14 year old.  She struggled with issues of life and death, the last words she said to him, the guilt of being too busy at the office and the asking for help that seemed too hard.   With over 200 pellets lodged in his left leg, she spent five days in the hospital with him and the next six weeks in physical therapy as he learned to walk again.  Already immersed in the "busy"ness of business, she was not prepared for having to make her vehicle handicap accessible, nor her home hallways, nor the bathrooms her son would need to use.

With her knees on the cold floor of a hospital room and in the physical therapy room amongst winces of pain and cries of frustration from her son, a mission was defined. Too many minorities, women and small business owners pursuing a dream are discouraged or derailed from pursuing their business aspirations because of their powerful commitment and responsibility to family. The moment defined by this "shot at life" literally shot life and passion into her business to assist those pursuing their dream of leadership and business ownership.

Faced with the challenges of being a business entrepreneur, Maria Elena utilizes word of mouth, connections and community to develop business. She learned quickly that there are many 'providers' willing to share marketing 'expertise' that is often expensive and not effective. Maria Elena Duron is the business and marketing coach on CBS television. High Points that happened immediately after the shooting:  Recognized as Business Woman of the Year; Franchise I was co-owner of at all time high membership; launched a new business and able to end year in the black; community recognition for success of new product launch;  son was able to walk again; very close family ties; changed another business realizing the huge time drain it was on the family and made it more family friendly; streamlined business structure 

Low Points that happened immediately after the shooting: Loss of business and betrayal by co-owners and assistant; Loss of an employee; Loss of a friendship who felt abandoned by time I was spending with family during my son's recovery; Making hard economic decisions.
